A further 136 people have died in the UK after contracting coronavirus, as cases continue to rise across the country.

It is the fourth day in a row that more than 100 deaths have been confirmed by the Department of Health and Social Care.

Another 15,650 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, bringing Britain’s total number of cases to 689,257.

Today’s figure is down 3,330 from yesterday, raising hopes that infections could be stabilising as recently introduced restrictions take effect.

Last Friday, 13,846 new cases were confirmed, rising to 19,724 on Wednesday, dropping to 18,980 yesterday.

However, daily cases do tend to peak on Tuesdays as a lag over the weekend is factored in.

According to the Department of Health, a total of 43,429 people have died in the UK 28 days after contracting coronavirus.

However separate figures published by the UK’s statistics agencies show there have now been 58,500 deaths registered in the UK where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

It comes after the Government unveiled it’s new three tier ‘traffic light’ system for lockdown measures in different parts of the country.

Downing Street is yet to meet an agreement with Greater Manchester, where authorities are understood to have refused to move into the most serious third tier for ‘very high risk’ areas unless they are given more funding.

UK manufacturing coronavirus tests that give results in 15 minutes

At a press conference this evening, Boris Johnson warned that he ‘will intervene’ if a solution isn’t reached, warning that the number of Covid inpatients in Manchester’s ICU beds is ‘already over 40% of the number at the height of the first wave’.

The PM also revealed that the UK has started building its own infrastructure to start manufacturing Covid-19 tests that can produce results as quickly as 15 minutes.

He added: ‘Over the next few weeks we will start distributing and trialling these tests across the country. This will enable us to do quick turnaround tests on NHS and care home staff, much more frequently.’
