Arsenal are in talks with Roma over a deal to sign midfielder Granit Xhaka.

Jose Mourinho has made signing the Switzerland international his first priority since taking charge in the Italian capital and Arsenal are open to selling the midfielder, who joined the club in a £34million deal from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016.

Xhaka has endured a difficult relationship with the club’s supporters and he recently intimated he would be keen on moving to the Eternal City in order to work under Mourinho.

Mikel Arteta is working on a tight budget this summer after the Gunners failed to qualify for Europe for the first time since 1996 and he’ll likely need to sell before he can buy.

Arsenal are interested in Wolves ace Ruben Neves, with the Midlands club demanding around £35m for his services.

Xhaka will likely have to be sold before the Gunners can fund a move for Neves and the club are said to value that Swiss at somewhere between £15m-£20m.

According to the Daily Mail, talks are now underway between Arsenal and Roma over the details of the transfer.

Xhaka is likely to be one of a number of players to leave the club this summer, with David Luiz and Dani Ceballos already confirmed exits.

Martin Odegaard is set to return to Real Madrid once his loan spell expires, while Arsenal will listen to offers for Hector Bellerin and Willian.
