Black Panther 2 is set to begin shooting in July 2021, almost a year after death of Chadwick Boseman.

The Marvel sequel was originally scheduled to begin production in March, but this date was understandably postponed following the devastating death of Boseman – who played T’Challa – aged 43.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the as yet untitled sequel will begin filming in Atlanta in July, for a shoot that will last ‘for upwards of six months’.

While the cast has not been confirmed, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Angela Bassett are all expected to return, with some sources saying that Wright’s character Shuri may take a bigger role.

The publication also reports that Narcos: Mexico star Tenoch Huerta is in talks to join the film as one of the antagonists.

Marvel has not yet commented on how they plan to proceed without Boseman, but executive producer Victoria Alonso did confirm that the actor would not be inserted into the movie with CGI.

She said: ‘There’s only one Chadwick, and he’s not with us.

‘Our king, unfortunately, has died in real life, not just in fiction, and we are taking a little time to see how we return to the story and what we do to honour this chapter of what has happened to us that was so unexpected, so painful, so terrible, in reality.’

Black Panther was a critical and commercial success upon its release in 2018, grossing over $1.3 billion (£980m) worldwide and becoming the first MCU film to win an Academy Award, as well as becoming the first superhero film to get a best picture nomination.

It was also praised for bringing Black and African representation to the screen, and became the highest grossing film by a Black director (Ryan Coogler).

The film made a superstar of Boseman, with the news of his death from colon cancer in August devastating movie lovers worldwide.

The actor’s final role will hit cinemas next week, with Boseman filming Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom before his death.

Boseman’s performance has Levee has been singled out as ‘glorious’ and ‘towering’ in early reviews, with the Los Angeles Times calling his final role ‘his finest’.

Black Panther 2 is scheduled for release in May 2022.
