A builder has become the first person in the UK to face no charges for killing three people in self-defence.

Gurjeet Singh, 30, had been walking home in Ilford when he was cornered by Baljit Singh, 34, Narinder Singh, 26, and Harinder Kumar, 22, on January 19. The group, who were labourers armed with knives and a hammer, were in a dispute with Mr Singh over ‘outstanding debt’, Redbridge Magistrates heard.

Mr Singh then produced his own knife during the attack and stabbed the three men to death. CCTV footage of the incident showed Mr Singh going ‘all Bruce Lee’ as he defended himself, a source told The Times.

He was not charged with murder or manslaughter, the Met Police confirmed. The court heard he had received a ‘crush injury’ to the top of his head consistent with a hammer attack, and other cuts to his face, head and hands.

He was charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and remanded in custody for trial in February, but a jury found him not guilty in August at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

Two other men, brothers Sandeep and Harpreet Singh, were also involved in the attack on Mr Singh and later jailed. They are not related to any of the other men.

Sandeep Singh, 29, from Romford, was jailed for four years in August for wounding with intent. He had overstayed his visa and was living illegally in the UK, and will be deported back India after serving his sentence.

Harpreet Singh, 27, was the appointed getaway driver on the night and jailed for 12 months. He had also overstayed his visa will be deported after his release.

The group had lain in wait for Mr Singh after seeing him at the Gurdwara, a Sikh place of worship, in Ilford. They had had a disagreement with him the previous evening, the court was told.

A vicious fight then broke out, in which the men chased and trapped Mr Singh. He killed three of them to save his own life.

Witness Louis O’Donoghue, 40, who arrived at the scene shortly after, said at the time: ‘It was just chaos. It was like something out of a movie. Horrific. It was like a bad day in Bosnia.’

Mr Singh, who had lived in Dagenham at the time of the attack, had also overstayed on his visa and was served a notice to leave in May 2015. He made a failed application to remain in the UK under the Human Rights Act the same year.
