Chi-Raq star Anthony Chisholm dies aged 77

Chi-Raq and Oz star Anthony Chisholm has died aged 77.

The film and Broadway star, who was best known for his role as Mr. Doctor Aesop in the Spike Lee movie, died on Friday evening, with his management confirming the sad news.

They wrote in an Instagram post: ‘The Katz Company is saddened to announce the passing of our longtime friend and client, Tony-Nominee, Anthony Chisholm.

‘Affectionately called ‘Chiz,’ he was an actor and storyteller like none-other, embodying loyalty, devotion, and compassion to his artistry.

‘We lost a great one today.’

Chisholm’s on-screen career began in 1968, with the actor going on to appear in HBO series Oz from 2001 to 2003, and 2007 movie Blackout, alongside Zoe Saldana.

He worked right up until the end of his life, appearing in The Dark End of the Street, which was released this year.

As well as his work in film and TV, he was an accomplished stage actor, receiving a Tony nomination in 2007 for his work on August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle play series Radio Golf.

Some of his other stage credits include Two Trains Running and Jitney.

Tributes have been pouring in for the late star, whose career spanned decades.

The Good Place star William Jackson Harper wrote on Twitter: ‘This dude was one of my faves. And undeniably one of the best. Rest In Peace, Anthony Chisholm.’

This is Us star Susan Kelchi Watson added: ‘An amazing actor and an amazing presence. Grateful to have witnessed his work. Rest peacefully, Anthony.’

Prime Suspect actor Damon Gupton went on to say: ‘Anthony Chisholm. Wow. Wow. Wow. Lost a great, great actor today. Salute.’
