TOBACCO companies could be forced to ditch plastic filters from fags as part of a government green drive.

Ministers are waging war on throwaway items and have non-biodegradable cigarette butts in their sights.

Smokers and tobacco firms will be asked for their views in a consultation to be launched soon.

Plastic cups, cups and wet wipes are also all in line to be banned to stop them polluting.

Ministers say the move will stem the tide of toxic waste which clogs up the world’s oceans and rivers, killing animals and wrecking the environment.

Environment Secretary George Eustice said: “Plastic damages our environment and destroys wildlife.

“This Government has waged war on unnecessary, wasteful plastics – banning the supply of plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds.

“While our carrier bag charge has cut consumption by 95 per cent in the main supermarkets.

“But it’s time we left our throwaway culture behind once and for all.”

Downing Street is launching a consultation on banning single-use plastic plates and knives and forks, and polystyrene cups and containers in England.

When flushed, wet wipes which contain plastics create giant fatbergs which clog sewers and rivers.

Plastic straws, stirrers and cotton buds are already outlawed.But Brits still chuck away billions of single-use plastics every year.

A whopping 1.1 billion disposable plates and 4.25 billion bits of plastic cutlery were binned in England last year.

Boris Johnson is eager to wean the nation off throwaway plastics as part of his bid to clean up the planet.
