A couple with a young daughter managed to save £1,250 on a princess themed bunk bed for their daughter by building one at home themselves for just £150.

Becky Collins and Brad Morrison had been looking for a new bed for their daughter Lexi but were left disheartened seeing prices upwards of £1,400 for the fairytale design they had in mind.

But rather than give up the two decided instead to see what they could put together on the budget they had, taking advantage of bargains on Facebook marketplace, as well as stores like B&M and Primark.

Speaking to Lovethesales.com the two explained their thought process:

“I spent hours on Pinterest looking at ideas for ‘Princess style’ beds and all the different designs cost over £1,000.” Becky said.

“When looking at what you got for your money, me and my partner thought it looked easy enough to make it ourselves.”

She continued: “I found the Ikea bunk bed on Facebook Marketplace for £100, which was such a bargain.

“We already owned the mattresses which was another win. I then made a list of everything else we needed to get…MDF, paint, wallpaper, lights, flowers, etc.”

Brad then carried on: “We got two big sheets of MDF for £20 on Facebook Marketplace. We used them for the ‘Princess design’ at the front of the bed.

“I then painted them in a Dulux pink paint from Facebook Marketplace which we got for free. Facebook Marketplace is full of people trying to get rid of things they no longer need or want. There are a lot of opportunities to get things for free.”

Becky then explained where they picked up the finer details: “I went to B&M and got battery-operated lights for £5, the ivy I got from eBay was also £5. I then got the roses with built-in lights from Primark for £10 and the postbox (which was previously a wedding postbox) for a £5 steal on Facebook Marketplace.”

Brad then finished: “We cut off some wood which we used to make a small roof and covered that in mermaid wallpaper (it was a free sample). Finally, we attached all the decor, including the ivy, roses, lights, and the royal letterbox.

“It took us a couple of hours to put it all together in Lexi’s room. As we both work full time. It was a great bonding experience for us as a couple and we had a lot of fun putting it together.”

Safe to say the couple from North Wales are now absolutely delighted with the finished product, and more importantly so is Lexi.
