Crystal Palace have reopened their search for a new manager after talks with Nuno Espirito Santo broke down at the 11th hour.

The Portuguese coach held extensive talks with Palace’s board last week and they had been left convinced that the 47-year-old was the right man to replace Roy Hodgson.

However, after informally agreeing a deal with the former Porto boss, talks broke down over a new set of demands from Nuno’s side, according to widespread reports.

Nuno had been the club’s first choice to replace Hodgson after impressing Palace’s board during discussions last week.

The Portuguese helped Wolves to promotion from the Championship and guided the Midlands club to back-to-back seventh spot finishes, before a less successful fourth season at the club last time out.

Nuno had appeared keen to move to Selhurst Park but he’s attracted interest from Everton in the last week after the Toffees lost Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid.

The Merseyside club could offer Nuno a far bigger budget and genuine hopes of a European finish, while Palace’s squad requires extensive work.

Palace are keen for a new manager to arrive as soon as possible given the work that needs to be done on the first team squad.

A number of players are out of contract and have been waiting for a new manager to be appointed before deciding their futures, while the like of Patrick van Aanholt, Mamadou Sakho and Connor Wickham have already decided to leave.
