Dad ‘needs therapy’ after paying £54 for four portions of fish and chips at London restaurant

A DISGRUNTLED dad was left “needing therapy” after forking out £54 for four portions of fish and chips at a London restaurant.

Gareth Jones’ father, Les Jones, 83, from Yorkshire, was left reeling by the cost of food in the capital.

Vicar Gareth said his dad wanted to treat their family to a chippy tea while visiting from up north.

But he was left horrified when he picked up the bill in Ilford, East London.

Gareth tweeted: “Dad wanted to buy fish and chips last night. We let him and he gave me his card to pay for them delivered.

“He’s now trying to access therapy as he’s realised 4 rounds of fish, chips and mushy peas cost him £54.

“Welcome to London, Yorkshireman.”

The funny tweet amassed hundreds of comments, with other proud Yorkshire folk sharing their tales of overpriced chippies.

One equally disgruntled user tweeted: “Rock and Sole Plaice in Covent Garden, £17 for one portion of Fish Chips and mushy peas! (Excluding Peroni) Tasty though.”

In an attempt to explain why might the cost of Mr Jones’ chippy tea was so expensive, one person offered: “155 pound for box cod fillet used to be 90 pounds not long ago.

“Rapeseed oil, litre now 22 pounds up from 18 pounds last year. If you used online delivery they take 35% give restaurant 65%. Out of that restaurant pay vat.”

But one person replied: “Who T.F. fries Yorkshire Fish & Chips in rapeseed oil. #beefdripping”

Another person said: “We had fish and chips and peas for 5 adults on Thursday and it cost £20.20. Best fish and chips in the world in Yorkshire.”

In a follow up post, Gareth said his dad was tickled by the reaction on Twitter.

“Dad is slowly recovering, helped by some red wine and reassuring words.

“He’s tickled that this post generated so much fun. Here he is looking much more content and very good for 83!”

Gareth also told The Sun Online that everyone chiming in on Twitter has “given him a lot of laughs” and cheered him up after recently losing his wife of 46 years.

“He doesn’t own a smartphone and can’t use a computer. So Twitter is alien to him – but he’s sat reading all the comments today!”

Meanwhile, Britain’s “most expensive fish and chips” has been revealed at an eye-watering £32.50.

Food critics are raving about this fishy dish, dubbing it a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ meal – despite the hefty price tag that is roughly 500 times more expensive than the standard fish supper.

Served with just seven chips, delicately sprinkled with herb garnish and accompanied by chunky tartare, pease pudding and curry sauce, this fish and chip meal is now served at a five-star hotel in London.

The chef behind this high-end takeaway meal is TV chef Tom Kerridge, who serves the meal at his new Bar & Grill in Corinthia hotel.
