A man survived a crash where almost his entire camper van was crushed because he happened to be out of the vehicle at the right time.

The holidaymaker pulled over on the side of the A46, near Stratford-upon-Avon in Warwickshire, to fix a burst tyre just before 1pm on Thursday.

Suddenly a Nissan 4×4 collided with his 20-foot long vintage camper van, destroying the car and leaving the roof hanging upside down over the windscreen.

Photographs show the Turbo D Ducato torn to pieces but the driver’s seat was astonishingly intact.

Luckily, the man was not in his van when the crash happened.

However, he had to be hauled to safety and rushed to hospital where he was treated for minor injuries.

The Nissan driver also suffered minor injuries.

There was so much debris from the destroyed camper van, the road had to be closed off for several hours so emergency workers could clear everything.

The photographs have shocked many people on social media who cannot believe the driver’s remarkable escape.

Johnny Wright said: ‘Absolutely staggered no one was killed. How the hell did anyone get out of that? He’s lost his camper van but still has his life!’

Susan Baldwin sympathised with the camper van owner’s loss, saying: ‘Must be devastating their pride and joy gone. Feel so sorry for them but thank god they weren’t more injured.’

The fire and rescue service used the crash to warn drivers to be extra careful when pulling over.

It said: ‘Please if you do breakdown, take refuge away from your vehicle in a safe place, preferably behind a barrier if there is one and await breakdown or emergency services.’
