Name five women artists, asks the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC on Instagram (@womeninthearts). And whether you know more or less than five, the facts around art equity are stark: in a ten-year study it was found that works by female artists make up just 11pc of acquisitions in US museums and galleries, and 14.9pc of solo and group exhibitions.
Closer to home, in London 78pc of galleries represent more men than women, while only 5pc represent an equal number of male and female artists – despite that 51pc of visual artists today are women. So thank goodness then for the aforementioned National Museum which reopened late last month after a two-year $70m (€65m) renovation.
