George Clooney ‘needed a success’ after Batman & Robin movie almost ruined his career

George Clooney says he desperately ‘needed a success’ after starring in the critically panned Batman & Robin in 1997.

The actor says no one wanted to work with him after he played Batman in the Joel Schumacher film.

It wasn’t until he landed a role in Out Of Sight the following year that things turned around both for him and director Steven Soderbergh.

He told The Sun on Sunday: ‘Steven was coming off a couple of flops and I was coming off Batman & Robin and we both needed a success. Our backs were against the wall, in a way.

‘I was still doing ER at the time and there were always these conversations about whether you can go from television to film. It was a big deal — and I was losing that argument.’

The 59-year-old felt he would be ‘held responsible for the movie’ and not just his own performance in whatever he did next, so ‘chased Steven down’ for Out Of Sight.

‘It all worked out. Steven directed the hell out of that movie — he did a beautiful job with it,’ George went on.

Despite his own feelings about it, Batman & Robin remains a cult classic for its bright, camp costumes and its villains: Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy and Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze.

The superhero is returning to the big screen with The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the titular hero.

After an outbreak of coronavirus ground things to a halt, filming has resumed in Liverpool with extras spotted wandering around in fancy dress.

Its release has been delayed to 2022 as sci-fi Dune, starring Timothee Chalamet, takes its original October 1 2021 slot.
