Helen Hunt says studios rejected her idea for Twister sequel starring ‘all Black and Brown storm chasers’

Helen Hunt has revealed her struggle to get a Twister sequel made because studios won’t get behind her idea to have ‘all Black and Brown’ storm chasers.

The star enjoyed box office success with the popular 1996 flick, which saw her star alongside the late Bill Paxton and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Appearing on Thursday’s Watch What Happens Live, the 57-year-old told Andy Cohen she’d formulated the idea with Hamilton favorite Daveed Diggs and his producing partner Rafael Casal.

‘I tried to get it made,’ she explained. ‘With Daveed, and Rafael and me writing it, and all Black and Brown storm-chasers, and they wouldn’t do it. I was going to direct it.’

Andy was surprised that the idead didn’t get put into production, leading Helen to add: ‘I’m not kidding. We couldn’t even get it made. Would that have been crazy?’

She continued: ‘We could barely get a meeting…And this is in June of 2020 when it was all about diversity. And it would have been so cool.’

‘There was a HBCU [historically Black college and university] where we wanted it to take place, and a rocket science club, and in this one they shoot the rockets into the tornado,’ the Mad About You star added. ‘It was going to be so cool.’

It might simply have been a case of bad timing for Helen, Daveed and Rafael seeing as a Twister reboot had been announced last June.

The new take on the flick would see Top Gun: Maverick director in charge of the flick so we’ll have to wait and see what happens with that.

For now, Helen is starring in the TV adaptation of Daveed’s flick, Blindspotting, which airs on Starz in the US.
