We’ve all been there. You’ve nipped into a different supermarket than you’d normally do your weekly grocery shop and, bam, there on the shelf is what you usually pick up, only cheaper .

In the interest of avoiding that for everyone, I compared 10 of my most frequently purchased grocery items from Ocado (please don’t at me too hard, I’m still living at home) with the closest replacements on Asda, Aldi and Tesco’s (virtual) shelves. These items were: bread, oat milk, eggs, soup, tomato sauce, grated mozzarella, salad leaves, dried pasta, guacamole, flavoured tortilla chips – for a total cost of £22.25.

Now, as you might expect, I largely found these cheaper at the three other supermarkets. However, in contrast to the recent rumours I’ve heard that Asda has been been identified as the cheapest, I found a different take the crown by far.

The verdict

Total Baskets

Asda: £14.20

Tesco: £16.95

Aldi: £11.09

By far the biggest winner was Aldi, which blew the other two – not to mention Ocado – far out of the water. In fact, with the exception of the dried spaghetti where Tesco had the cheapest per gram (75p for 1kg) for closest match, it won every round. However, I did have to swap out a few of the items – the tortilla chips for all of them, and Aldi had a different brand of Guacamole, which accounts for some of the dips in price. One significant thing I noticed in comparison to a past experiment in Poundland, though, is that the branded items generally didn’t budge much – though you can still save a few pence here and there. So, Poundland still holds my heart there.
