Jose Mourinho says Gareth Bale has been left on the bench for Tottenham against West Ham simply because he has a string of excellent attacking options at his disposal.

The Welshman is due to make his second Spurs debut on Sunday against the Hammers in the Premier League, but it is now likely to come as a substitute.

Steve Bergwijn has been given the nod in the front three alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, with Bale left on the bench with Lucas Moura and fellow summer signing Carlos Vinicius.

Mourinho is thrilled with how many options he has in his squad, with a strong bench despite Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso being out injured and Dele Alli remaining out of the squad.

Bale is fit and ready to play and Mourinho insists he just doesn’t need to start him this weekend.

‘We have three incredible attacking players on the bench,’ Mourinho told Sky Sports.

‘Gareth, [Carlos] Vinicius, Lucas [Moura] and we have Dele and Lamela, with a little problem. Lamela, Lo Celso injured, but this is our squad in this moment
we have lots of talents in the last third of the pitch and we have these incredible solutions.’

Former Tottenham player Graeme Souness feels Bale should be starting whenever he is able to do so because he could be absolutely vital to Tottenham’s success this season.

The former Liverpool manager reckons that if Bale can stay fit and play regularly, Spurs will make the top four this campaign.

‘Yeah [I would play him], the rest of the players get a lift from him being there,’ Souness told Sky Sports.

‘I think the challenge for Spurs is keeping him as fit as possible and getting as many minutes out of him as possible.

‘If they can do that and he can play 90% of the games then Spurs will finish in the top four.’
