Asked if she preferred football or rugby, the Bristol West MP said: “Do you know, I’ve never been to a football or a rugby match, but I know how much it matters to other people.

“My husband played rugby, so I’m going to have to go with rugby.”

Some of her constituents will be sports-mad, supporting Bristol City and Bristol Rovers in football or the city’s Premiership rugby team.

Just days ago Labour lashed out at Rishi Sunak for appointing Grant Shapps as the UK’s new defence secretary.

John Spellar, the Labour vice-chair of the Commons Defence Committee, said: “Grant Shapps has had no background in the brief – unlike several of the contenders who were suggested in the press, who had good knowledge of different parts of defence.”

Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry piled in: “It really doesn’t matter how many new jobs Rishi Sunak gives to his friends, it is still moving the deck chairs, they are still a sinking ship.”

Sir Keir Starmer unveiled his new-look shadow cabinet earlier this month ahead of next year’s general election showdown.

Blairite beasts including Liz Kendall and Pat McFadden were rewarded with big promotions, while weak links such as Lucy Powell and Lisa Nandy faced savage demotions.
