Episode 1 of new MCU series Loki has been released on Disney Plus, reuniting diehard Marvel fans with the backstabbing villain we all can’t help but love.

In his eponymous show, Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is apprehended by the TVA (Time Variance Authority) after causing a breach in the timeline.

However, rather than face punishment, the TVA end up recruiting the God of Mischief to help them solve a problem that is causing them a lot of grief.

So how is Loki still alive after Avengers: Endgame and how did he die in the first place?

How does Loki die in Infinity War?

In Avengers: Infinity War, viewers meet Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Loki shortly after the events of Thor: Ragnarok, when their kingdom, Asgard, was destroyed by the demon Surtur during the defeat of their sister Hela, the Goddess of Death (Cate Blanchett).

After fleeing the realm with the remaining survivors of Asgard, their ship is intercepted by Thanos, who is shown coming on board in Infinity War and taking possession of the Space Stone, otherwise known as the Tesseract.

Loki pretends to offer his services to Thanos as a guide on Earth, where two other Infinity Stones are located.

However, as he approaches Thanos – while a chained up Thor watches helplessly from the sidelines – Loki attempts to kill the Titan with a concealed dagger, before being stopped in his tracks.

Thanos then picks Loki up by the neck, as the God of Mischief desperately tries to escape his grasp.

After telling Thanos that he will ‘never be a god’, Loki is strangled to his death, leaving Thor distraught.

How is Loki still alive after Endgame?

At the very end of Infinity War, Thanos Snaps half of the universe out of existence after obtaining all six of the Infinity Stones.

Several years later in Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers embark on a risky mission to try and bring all those who vanished back, by travelling through time to different time periods to collect all six of the Infinity Stones, bring them back to the present day and reverse Thanos’ treachery.

One of the points in time that they travel back to is 2012, when Loki fought and lost to the Avengers during the Battle of New York, as depicted in the first Avengers film.

Having retrieved the Tesseract, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr) is walking away with it stored safely in a briefcase when he accidentally drops it due to a disruption caused by the 2012 version of Hulk (Mark Ruffalo).

As the Tesseract tumbles by Loki’s feet, he spots his opportunity to escape, grabbing the Space Stone and disappearing into thin air.

This means that the Loki we’re watching in the Loki Marvel series is the 2012 iteration of the character, who hasn’t experienced the events of Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok or Avengers: Infinity War.

So will Loki end up going down a similar path? Or is his future now completely up in the air?

Loki is available to watch on Disney Plus and returns next Wednesday.
