The news was revealed in a new promo clip posted on Twitter which shows the Time Variance Authority’s file on Loki, which sees their sex listed as ‘fluid’.
It won’t come as too much of a surprise, given the inspiration behind the character. While depictions in the MCU have tended to portray the character as male, the Nose legends it’s based on describe Loki as gender-fluid and bisexual.
It still comes as a welcome step. Marvel boss Kevin Feige has spent recent years trying to make the MCU a more diverse place, with Mark Ruffalo previously revealing that Kevin almost quit his job over lack of representation.
Back in 2018, Kevin also revealed that Marvel Studios already had a character from the LGBTQ+ spectrum in its universe – though he did add that more were coming.
The revelation comes just a few days before Loki is set to arrive on Disney+, marking one of the biggest new shows of the year.
Loki, which stars Tom Hiddleston as the titular character, follows them after the events of the MCU’s Avengers: Endgame, when the 2012 version of Loki managed to escape the Avengers by getting their hands on the Tesseract, otherwise known as the Space Stone.
Having caused a breach in the timeline due to their misdeed, Loki is apprehended by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a timeless organisation whose job it is to monitor the timeline and make sure everything is as it should be.
Joining Tom in a star-studded cast is Owen Wilson, Richard E. Grant, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, and Wunmi Mosaku.
Loki is set to premiere on Disney Plus on Wednesday June 9.
