Love Actually child star calls the Christmas classic ‘s***’: ‘It has aged badly’

Love Actually is a festive staple, but has come under scrutiny in recent years due to its rather dubious storylines.

And even some of its stars question how much of a classic it is 17 years on.

Lulu Popplewell, who played Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman’s characters’ daughter Daisy, has called the movie ’s***’ and called out its sexist portrayal of female characters.

Now 29, Lulu starred as Daisy, the daughter of Harry and Karen who famously played a lobster in her school’s nativity play.

And speaking on the podcast Almost Famous with Barnaby Slater, the comedian, who was ’10 or 11’ when she filmed the movie, isn’t a big fan of Love Actually despite starring in it.

She said: ‘I don’t regret it at all. Look, softly be it spoken I think it’s a s*** film.

‘I think it’s aged badly. All the women in it are sort of passive objects. I think that there was an article that described them as passive objects to be acquired, and on re-watching it’s not great.’

However, Lulu defended Richard Curtis, saying: ‘You also have to remember that he was writing in the context of the time.

‘I mean I don’t know how he excuses more recent bits of work. But it was what it was in 2003 or whenever it was out.’

She added that the film is not for her because she doesn’t like ‘cheese’, but joked: ‘I’m glad people like it. You’re allowed to. But you have terrible taste.’

Lulu was 12 when Love Actually came out, but couldn’t even watch it at the time due to its 15 rating.

She said: ‘It had nipples and everything. We didn’t even get to watch it at the premiere. We walked down the red carpet and then got taken to dinner at Planet Hollywood.’

Lulu – whose sister Anna starred in the Chronicles Of Narnia series – had previously voiced Lyra in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation of His Dark Materials and is now a comedian, having taken her show to the Edinburgh Fringe last year.

Love Actually follows a star-studded ensemble cast in multiple linked storylines, led by the Prime Minister David (Hugh Grant) and his crush on staffer Natalie (Martine McCutcheon).

Other stories include Harry (Alan Rickman) flirting with his secretary behind the back of his wife (Emma Thompson), a love triangle between newlyweds Juliet and Peter (Keira Knightley and Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Peter’s best friend Mark (Andrew Lincoln), Sarah’s (Laura Linney) difficult family situation and her crush on a colleague, Daniel (Liam Neeson) coping with the loss of his wife, his stepson Sam (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) falling in love, and Jamie (Colin Firth) fleeing to France after being cheated on.

Due to the love stories occurring in the run-up to Christmas, it has become a modern festive classic, but has been criticised due to the multiple examples of workplace harassment painted as romantic in the plot.
