First there was a furore over four portions of chips costing £54, and now there’s a brouhaha over the price of a 99.

A man who had been enjoying the Roaches – a rocky ridge in the Peak District – during half term stopped for a well-deserved ice cream.

However, the price was not displayed on the ice cream van, so when he was charged £10 for two 99 flakes he felt as though he was a victim of daylight robbery.

The unidentified man said: ‘The first and last time I pay £10 for two 99s. I know there’s a Flake shortage but come the f*** on!’

He complained to the vendor who apologised, but still took the cash.

The man latter added: ‘I received an apology and assurances that pricing will now be clear on the vans.

‘Hopefully no one will be “price ambushed” moving forward.’

Last month the makers of Flakes warned of a shortage because of an increased demand as people were released from lockdown.

Several ice cream vendors said they had not experienced such a shortage before and were struggling to get enough in time for Summer.
