Manchester United have confirmed eight players will leave the club having reached the end of their contracts at Old Trafford.

First-team goalkeepers Sergio Romero and Joel Pereira have been released along with six members of the club’s academy in Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor and Aliou Traore.

Romero, who arrived at the club on a free transfer in 2015, diligently served as David de Gea’s understudy for five years until the return of Dean Henderson last summer.

The Argentina international did not make a single appearance during his final season with the club.

United have also confirmed Juan Mata remains in discussions with the club over a new contract along with veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant.

The Spaniard started just nine games in all competitions for the club during the 2020-21 season, scoring on the final day of the season against Wolves.

United have the option to extend his stay at Old Trafford by a further year.

‘I’ve kept the dialogue with Juan and we’re due to speak again very soon,’ Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said in May.

‘Of course, he’s not played as much as he’d like and that’s a decision that we’ll make with him.

‘He’s in charge of his own future and he’s been such a good servant for the club,” Ole added. “But of course, it’s hard, as I’ve said so many times, to leave good players out, good people out of the team.

‘It’s about what does he want as his next step in his career? Is it [to] still play out his career here, or is it going somewhere else?

‘We haven’t made a final decision yet.’
