Manchester United are confident of tying up a deal to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane in the next 12 days and feel they will sign the Frenchman for a ‘good price’, according to the Manchester Evening News.

The 28-year-old has one year to run on his deal at the Bernabeu and he’s intimated that he is unwilling to sign an extension, which gives Madrid little choice but to listen to offers for him this summer.

Varane is keen on a new challenge and believes he’s suited to Premier League football. United have long wanted the defender, with Ed Woodward privately briefing in 2018 that he would be willing to break the club’s transfer record to sign the World Cup winner.

Such measures will not be necessary this summer due to Varane’s contract situation and United hope to sign the France ace for lower than Madrid’s £50m asking price.

Varane is currently on holiday after his participation at Euro2020 but the MEN report that he would rather not return to Madrid and would prefer for negotiations to be wrapped up in time for the end of his vacation in order for him to move straight to Old Trafford.

United are said to be ‘inching closer’ to a deal, with the club confident that it can be sealed within the next fortnight.

Varane would become United’s second signing of the summer following the £73m agreement to sign Jadon Sancho, though that deal is yet to be fully confirmed.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed yesterday that ‘just paperwork’ was holding up an announcement and he batted away questions about Varane.
