Warning: Graphic imagery.

Married At First Sight star David Pugh was left covered in blood after fighting off five burglars wielding machetes at his home.

The sales director, who has had training in martial arts, fought off the thugs using Krav Maga, a military self-defence system, after they burst into his house at 3am, and has since opened up about the ordeal.

He told Birmingham Live: ‘I got woken up at three in the morning with the sound of broken glass and doors being kicked in.

‘It became an out-and-out battle in my house for about ten minutes. My martial arts training just kicked in. I wasn’t being brave. I was very lucky – there were golf clubs, machetes, table legs flying.’

His dog Zeus was also attacked.

The burglars left empty handed, with David taking a photo of himself covered in blood after the ordeal which happened in February 2018.

David, 56, is a self-described ‘prepper’, with the TV star reasoning that he always wants to be prepared for anything – especially after what he’s been through.

During the Channel 4 show, he gifted his wife Shareen, 47, an everyday survival kit, which included items such as a ‘CPR face shield’ and ‘a pen that can smash glass if you need to get out of a train or are trapped in a car.’

She wasn’t entirely impressed, with David saying: ‘I could come across a little bit crazy. It is extreme but I’ve always been a prepper really.’

He added that his wife was ‘fortunate never to have experienced anything like that night.’

The spark wore off for the couple, who appeared on the fifth series of the show, as they have since split.

However, David has said he’s had plenty of offers since the episode aired.

Married At First Sight sees experts match up couples, who see each other for the first time when they tie the knot.

Ahead of his appearance on the show, David, who was previously married for 10 years and has two teenagers, said: ‘I’ve had a dozen years to reflect on why the marriage didn’t work, and areas where I probably didn’t help that in the sense of communication.

‘I think I’m a lot more relaxed now — I don’t sweat the small stuff any more.’

Married At First Sight is available to stream on All 4.
