Naga Munchetty gets tough with Manchester council leader on tier 3 lockdown rules as he fails to answer question

Naga Manchetty got tough in a BBC Breakfast interview with the Leader of Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese about plans to move Greater Manchester into tier three lockdown rules.

It comes as Greater Manchester, currently in tier two, vows to ‘stand firm’ against the move in a statement made by Mayor Andy Burnham.

The newsreader asked Sir Richard to explain what he would differently from the proposed restrictions.

‘We’re saying we don’t want to be in tier three we’re absolutely clear about that…’ he began.

Naga cut in: ‘Yes, but what is the difference in terms of what you are proposing and what the government thinks is appropriate as in tier three?’

‘Whether we’re in tier two or tier three, we still think there ought to be a package of financial support for businesses-‘ Sir Richard explained, prompting Naga to apologise.

‘Maybe I’m not being clear,’ she said, ‘What are you proposing to bring down the infection rate in the region that is different to what would be imposed if tier three were in place?’

Sir Richard replied: ‘We’re proposing that off sales should cease at least at the same time as on sale licence premises close. We’re seeing big queues outside off licences from ten o’clock, particularly on a Friday and Saturday night.

‘We’re proposing that we should have far tougher powers to be able to be able to close any premises, not just licenced premises, that aren’t complying with guidance, any public place where people can meet.’

He also spoke about concerns with Bonfire Night approaching, and wanted to ‘make sure we don’t have any public bonfires whatsoever.’

Under tier three rules residents are banned from socialising with other households both indoors and in private gardens, while bars and pubs will have to close unless they can operate as restaurants only.

Liverpool City Region is currently under tier three so far with Lancashire to follow.

BBC Breakfast airs daily from 6am on BBC One.
