HMS Defender is escorting the carrier strike group on its round-the-world voyage.

But sister ship HMS Diamond limped into port in Italy with crippling propulsion problems.

Defence Minister Jeremy Quin said it was for “maintenance, inspection and defect rectification”, which is expected to take at least a month.

He said HMS Daring, HMS Duncan and HMS Dragon were all undergoing planned maintenance.

And HMS Dauntless is awaiting sea trials after a £160million upgrade.

Ex-Armed Forces minister Mark Francois said it highlighted “poor support” for the Navy.
