Phil Collins has become the latest musician to hit President Donald Trump with a cease and desist letter after his song was played at a rally.

The Genesis frontman’s classic song In The Air Tonight was played at the presidential campaign rally in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday evening before Trump arrived onstage.

Clips of the track being played at the event began circulating on social media and many deemed the song choice tone-deaf given the nature of the coronavirus pandemic and the way the disease is transmitted.

However, it has also been claimed that the Trump administration didn’t have permission to play the track.

A rep for Collins told Consequence of Sound: ‘Yes we are well aware of the Trump campaign’s use of this song and we have already issued a “cease and desist” letter via our lawyers who continue to monitor the situation.’

Collins, 69, released In The Air Tonight in 1981 and lyrics include: ‘I can feel it coming in the air tonight, oh Lord/ And I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life.’

Collins shared his opinion of Trump in 2016 and told Billboard: ‘I’ve got a house full of anti-Trumpers.

‘Even my Matthew, at 11, he hates Trump. I really hate Trump’s surrogates; I just wish that some time one of the guys would stand up on CNN and say, “Yep, sorry, he f****d up when he said that. He should never have said that”.

‘But none of them do. They just back him up. He makes tremendous gaffes and nobody owns up to them.’

He added: ‘Ooh, it makes me mad. I just think Trump is an accident waiting to happen – a big accident waiting to happen.’

The British musician joins a growing list of artists who haven’t supported Trump playing their music in his campaign for reelection to the White House.

Just this year alone, The Rolling Stones, Linkin Park, Neil Young, Panic! At The Disco and the estate of Tom Petty are among those who have either sent cease and desist letters or claimed the Trump administration did not have permission to use the songs.

In July, Sir Elton John and Sir Mick Jagger were among a large group of popular artists to sign an open letter calling for a ban on politicians playing their music unauthorised.

In the letter shared on the Artist Rights Alliance website, the singers state that the politicians could be in breach of copyright law if they continue to use their songs.

Cyndi Lauper, Lorde, R.E.M., Linkin Park, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sia, Blondie, Sheryl Crow, Green Day and Panic! at the Disco are among the other artists who have joined the petition.

Two tourists, a mother and son, and their tour guide were snorkelling in the Red Sea in the resort of Sharm El-Sheikh when the attack happened, the country’s Environment Ministry said. They were rushed to hospital. An initial investigation into Sunday’s attack at Ras Mohammed National Park showed it involved a two-meter (six-foot) long Oceanic Whitetip shark, the ministry added. The boy is now in intensive care and surgery failed to save his arm, according to Ukraine’s State Agency for the Development of Tourism. An anonymous Egyptian health official said the guide had lost a leg, while the mother suffered minor injuries. Officials have closed the area of the national park where the attack took place. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe ‘told to pack bag for prison return’ over new charge

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe could spend years more in jail (Picture: PA) A British-Iranian mother who has been detained in Iran since 2016 has been summoned to court to face fresh charges, according to her family. Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was released to house arrest in March due to the coronavirus outbreak, was told to ‘pack a bag’ as she would be returning to prison after the hearing on Monday, her husband claims. The mother-of-one is nearing the end of a five-year sentence over allegations of plotting to overthrow the Iranian government. She has always denied the charges. The summons came on Tuesday after it emerged that a UK court hearing on a debt owed to Iran, due to start on November 3, had been postponed for six months. Her husband Richard Ratcliffe said: ‘We don’t know what will happen on Monday, we don’t know how far and how soon they will take forward their prison threat. ‘But we do know that the Revolutionary Guard are signalling something to the British governme..
