We all know that things don’t come cheap in London, but the humble roast dinner surely couldn’t cost more than £15, right? Well, think again as a well-known food blogger has shared her recommendation for the perfect spot for a Sunday roast – and it costs an eye-watering £30 a plate.

With the city’s pubs and restaurants packed each weekend with Sunday reservations, the account @foodguidelondon has taken to TikTok to reveal the “best in London” for a roast. Captioning it: “Amazing Sunday roast at the Spread Eagle pub in Wandsworth”, she showed her 107,000 followers her meal at the South West London eating spot.

Videos of the £60 spread showed Yorkshire puddings, parsnips, roast potatoes and a 600g portion of prime rib sitting on her plate. To the backdrop of the mouth-watering videos, she said: “Everyone has seen this pub, it’s in Wandsworth, it used to be an old man’s pub. It’s on the corner, it’s called Spread Eagle. Look at my roast!”

Describing them as the “best roast potatoes I’ve ever had”, she showed her followers how crunchy they were and said the stuffing was “elite, 10/10”.

Of the pricey bill, she said: “This was £60 and it was for two people to share, it was every single penny. It says feeds two, it could easily feed four.” Taking to the comment section, her followers wrote: “This looks divine!! I need to try!!” whilst another said “Booking a table as we speak”.

One user however didn’t seem so impressed, saying: “I love the history of this gaff but I was in there a few years back and a mouse ran across my foot”. She was quick to reassure them that the Spread Eagle had been taken over by new owners, and has been gutted and redone.

Located on Wandsworth High Street, the Spread Eagle offers four different roast options, with customers able to choose between Rolled Blyburgh pork belly, half lemon & thyme roasted chicken, 28-day dry aged fore rib of beef, beetroot & butternut squash wellington. Prices range between £16.50 to £22 with a number of side options including truffled cauliflower cheese, pickled beets & goats cheese salad.

On their website, the Spread Eagle welcomes future customers by writing: “Step inside the Spread Eagle and immerse yourself in the quintessential sights, ambience and outstanding hospitality of a traditional British pub.

“Gleaning inspiration from her history, this classic Victorian pub & hotel stands proudly in the very heart of Wandsworth, South West London and is triumphantly reminiscent of the 18th century public houses of her past. A haven for foodies, the menu includes pub classics which are joyfully redolent of British dishes served in days gone by.”

You can make a reservation via their website or head to 71 Wandsworth High Street.
