***Warning: Star Trek: Discovery spoilers ahead***

Star Trek Discovery has returned and Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is in a brave new world without a crew – and on a new mission to restore hope to the universe.

With the help of a mysterious space pirate – sorry ‘courier’ – named Book (David Ajala) she is now in charge of restoring the Federation to its former glory after The Burn.

The Burn has had a major effect on the universe, but what exactly is it? And how has it turned the world into the desolate wasteland they are now navigating?

Here’s everything we know so far about it…

What is The Burn?

The Burn is a disastrous chemical event that occurred approximately 150 years before the events of Discovery season three.

It occurred when most of the galaxy’s supplies of dilithium exploded, taking out a lot of life with it.

Dilithium is an element that is imperative for warp-speed ships, and without it, it makes that kind of travel almost impossible.

With so much of it gone, and the ability to create more also difficult, it made travelling around the galaxy increasingly difficult and life-threatening, so it had dramatically decreased.

This is why Book was on the hunt for dilithium during episode one, after being knocked out of a sky by Burnham as she shot through the wormhole.

What caused The Burn?

That’s a major problem – we don’t know just yet. But we’re pretty sure that would become a thing during season three.

With the Discovery still missing, only time will tell if they will ever reunite with Burnham – and then comes the difficult task of figuring out how long they think they’ve gone, who’s taken over commanding of the ship in Burnham’s absence, and what that means going forward.

What happened to The Federation?

The Federation, under pressure over the use of dilithium, struggled under the new pressure of not knowing if the compound was ever going to explode again.

According to Book: ‘They couldn’t say what happened or if it would happen again… they tried to hang on, but after a while, they just weren’t around anymore.’

However, they do still exist in one way or another, and have now recruited Burnham for help to restore it to its former glory.

Star Trek: Discovery continues Thursdays on CBS: All Access in the US and Netflix on Fridays in the UK.
