The Savoy viewers were left feeling ‘heartbroken’ after tonight’s episode, as it showed how the coronavirus pandemic unfolded.

Viewers feared for the staff members because in some scenes they could be seen coughing and sneezing.

Some felt that the ITV series showed how unaware we all were before Covid-19 swept the UK.

In one scene, one of the concierges can be seen coughing as he explained to his co-worker that he had a cold.

‘There’s this cold Rob, just to let you know. It’s a cough, I have had it for a week now.’

‘It could be this virus,’ he added. ‘Coronavirus.’

To which Rob replied: ‘I think the chances of contracting it, is probably less than being hit by a bus.’

Later on in the episode, one of the butlers, Shaun told how one of the American guests wasn’t feeling well after believing she caught something on the plane.

Speaking to his co-workers he said: ‘To think we are exposed.’

His boss Richard asked him: ‘Did you go and wash your hands afterwards?’

To which he replied: ‘No.’

Taking to social media, viewers shared their heartbreak at how Covid has impacted the economy, as well as expressing their concern for the staff.

One viewer commented: ‘Watching The Savoy and seeing the pandemic unfold on them being unaware what is about to happen is scary.

‘Lots of staff starting to cough/feel ill but still going into work. I don’t think we will ever go back to being expected to work now if feeling under the weather.’

Another tweeted: ‘Brokenhearted to watch what has happened to the hospitality industry due to Covid.’

While one added: ‘Watching ITV’s fly on the wall documentary #TheSavoy and it’s heart breaking watching a thriving, proud and hardworking workforce taken down by COVID.’

The Savoy closed its doors on March 23, due to lockdown restrictions.

It was able to re-open in September, where it greeted 200 out of its 500 staff members back.

They hope that the rest of its furloughed staff will be able to go back soon.

The Savoy is available on the ITV Hub.
