The UK is getting ready to create coronavirus tests that produce results in 15 minutes, the Prime Minister has said.

Speaking during a Downing Street press conference, Boris Johnson stated that it was clear the tests were ‘highly effective’ and capable of ‘saving lives and jobs over winter’.

He went on: ‘We’ve already bought millions of these tests, some of which are very simple, meaning you simply need to wipe the swab inside your mouth and they can give a result in as quickly as 15 minutes.

‘Some of these fast tests work with saliva and we’re already using these in hospitals. We’ve started building the infrastructure for domestic manufacture of these tests.

‘This will ensure that Britain has the ability to produce millions of fast tests here. Over the next few weeks we will start distributing and trialling these tests across the country. This will enable us to do quick turnaround tests on NHS and care home staff, much more frequently.’

During the conference, Johnson also urged leaders in Greater Manchester to ‘reconsider and engage constructively’ over tier three restrictions, before stating that he will intervene if an agreement cannot be reached.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said this week he does not oppose entering tier three, but wants more furlough support for workers who will be impacted by the restrictions.

Johnson said today he wanted to avoid another national lockdown ‘if at all possible’, but added that he could not ‘rule anything out’.

Discussing Greater Manchester, he said: ‘On recent trends, in just over two weeks there will be more Covid patients in intensive care than at the peak of the first wave so I urge the mayor to reconsider and engage constructively.

‘I cannot stress enough: time is of the essence. Each day that passes before action is taken means more people will go to hospital, more people will end up in intensive care and tragically more people will die.

‘Of course, if agreement cannot be reached, I will need to intervene in order to protect Manchester’s hospitals and save the lives of Manchester’s residents. But our efforts would be so much more effective if we work together.’

It comes after the Government announced that a further 1,500,000 people in England will be placed under the toughest coronavirus restrictions this weekend as Lancashire moves into tier three.
