Londoners will face tier two ‘high alert’ level Covid-19 restrictions from Saturday morning, which puts a ban on members of different households mixing indoors.

One of the thresholds for an area being moved into the second tier of lockdown is 100 cases per 100,000 people, and coronavirus infection rates in 13 boroughs of the capital have exceeded this number, including Richmond upon Thames, Ealing, Hackney and the City of London.

Across London the seven-day average case rate stood at 97 per 100,000 people on October 15, but was said to be rising sharply.

What counts as ‘London’ – where will go into tier 2 lockdown?

The tier two restrictions apply to all 32 boroughs of London (listed below) plus the City of London, not just the areas that have hit the 100 coronavirus cases threshold.

Several other areas within the M25 remain in tier one, including Dartford and Swanley in Kent, Staines, Chertsey and Addlestone in Surrey, Watford, Borehamwood and Rickmansworth in Hertfordshire, and Loughton and Chigwell in Essex.

If you’re unsure, the government has a tool that lets you check which tier your area is in.

What are the 32 boroughs of London?

The 32 boroughs of London are as follows:

  • Barking and Dagenham
  • Barnet
  • Bexley
  • Brent
  • Bromley
  • Camden
  • Croydon
  • Ealing
  • Enfield
  • Greenwich
  • Hackney
  • Hammersmith and Fulham
  • Haringey
  • Harrow
  • Havering
  • Hillingdon
  • Hounslow
  • Islington
  • Kensington and Chelsea
  • Kingston upon Thames
  • Lambeth
  • Lewisham
  • Merton
  • Newham
  • Redbridge

Under tier two rules, you cannot mix with members of other households indoors, though you can still mix outside, in a garden or a park for instance, as long as it’s with five people or fewer and social distancing is observed.

Groups cannot exceed a total of six people.

Pubs and bars can remain open in tier two lockdown, with the 10pm curfew in place, as can all businesses that are able to operate in a Covid-secure way.

Schools, universities and places of worship will also remain open, weddings and funerals can go ahead with the current limits on guests – 15 currently for wedding receptions and up to 30 for a funeral – and gyms can also remain open.

Organised indoor sport and exercise classes can continue to take place, as long as the ‘rule of six’ is followed.

People in tier two areas have also been asked to only make essential journeys and not travel too far outside the area in which they live unless it is absolutely necessary.

London’s tier two status will be reviewed every 14 days.
