Before Jimmy started his round of questions, Jeremy went over the rules of the ITV show for him.

He explained: “You’ve got four life lines, 50/50, you’ve got two phone a friends because you’ve got no audience because of Covid…”

Jimmy couldn’t help but butt in and joked: “Oh I thought that was because people prefered Tarrant.”

As the crew gasped, the comedian asked: “What?!”

Jeremy replied: “That was because they were promised Sean Lock!

Viewers were deeply offended by the joke as it comes just three months after the comedian passed away from cancer.

One wrote on Twitter: “Jermey ‘They were promised Sean Locke!’ Even if this was filmed before his tragic passing … Shame on you !  For airing it! #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire not cool.”

A second said: “That Sean lock joke wasn’t really appropriate

. I wander if this was filmed before his death?”

A third added: “Very poorly timed joke about the late Sean Lock on @MillionaireUK just now. Clearly filmed before he passed but could have been cut out of the edit surel.”

A fourth chimed in: “Honestly, no editorial done before broadcasting this episode. Not good enough.”

A fifth tweeted: “Well done @ITV. It’s very sensitive of you to include a joke about the late Sean Lock not being able to appear on ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?’”

However others pointed out that Sean would have liked the joke.

One fan replied to a tweet slamming the joke with: “Pretty sure Sean would have wanted it left in.”

Another added: “Jimmy knew him well. He knew Sean would find it funny.”

“While the Sean Lock poke was a bit on the

side, it’s what he would have wanted #WhoWantsToBeAMillionaire,” another user tweeted.

Jimmy and Sean worked together on Channel 4’s Eight Out of 10 Cats for over 15 years together.

Shortly after the news was confirmed, Jimmy took to Twitter to pay his respects to his much-loved co-star.

He shared with his 6.6m followers: “Brutal news about Sean Lock today. I loved him. I’m watching clips of him right now – laughing & crying. I’ll miss him so much.”

Sean died aged 58 in August following a lengthy battle with cancer.

The star was best known for his deadpan humour as he appeared on panel shows 8 Out Of 10 Cats and 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

A statement from Off The Kerb Productions said: “It is with great sadness that we have to announce the death of Sean Lock.

“He died at home from cancer, surrounded by his family.

“Sean was one of Britain’s finest comedians, his boundless creativity, lightning wit and the absurdist brilliance of his work, marked him out as a unique voice in British comedy.

“Sean was also a cherished husband and father to three children.

“Sean will be sorely missed by all that knew him.

“We kindly request that the privacy of his family and children is respected at this difficult time.”
