Q I ordered a new car from a local dealer a few weeks ago and it should be ready for me to pick it up this weekend. Do I need to have my car insurance in place before I pick the car up and how do I sort this out? As it’s a new car, it’s not registered yet but it should be soon. I’ll be trading my old car in and this is still currently insured.

A You should call your insurer or broker and tell them that you have bought a new car and wish to change it over to your existing car insurance policy, said Alan Behan, motor product manager, Aviva Insurance Ireland.
