Mr Burnham has been warned that the measures may be imposed by the government if no agreement is reached (Picture: Getty Images) Boris Johnson has given Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham until midday today to agree to harsher Covid-19 restrictions for the region or face having them imposed by the government.
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said that after 10 days of negotiations failed to reach an agreement, the deteriorating situation in the region meant the government had no choice but to act.
Mr Burnham and other local leaders have been holding out for further financial support for businesses and workers that would be affected by entering the highest restrictions.
However, Mr Jenrick said in a statement: ‘There are now more Covid-19 patients in Greater Manchester hospitals than in the whole of the South West and South East combined.
